ENERGY AUDITS FOR RESIDENCES AND SMALL BUSINESSES
(Serving Chittenden County)
WHAT IS AN ENERGY AUDIT AND HOW CAN IT HELP YOU?
Insulation: We inspect the building to determine if it is cost effective to add insulation to attic, walls, ceilings, knee walls, etc.
Air Sealing: We use a Minneapolis Blower Door to determine the air leakage of the building. If cost effective, professional air sealing can be recommended to seal the most wasteful air leaks.
Heating Pipes and Ducts: Heating pipes and ducts are inspected for leakage (ducts) and insulation. If cost effective, duct sealing and insulation or insulation of steam or hot water heating pipes is recommended to reduce heat losses.
Heating System: The efficiency of the furnace or boiler is tested. If it cost effective, upgrading to a more efficient, modern heating unit is recommended.
Other: Other measures, such as programmable thermostats, energy efficient lighting, more efficient electrical appliances and others are also considered when doing the audit.
What we Consider: Generally, we consider measures that can pay back in ten years or less. Although, many people think of new windows as a cost effective measure, these usually have a very long payback period and are rarely recommended. It is usually more cost effective to caulk or add weatherstripping to the existing windows.
Who can Benefit Most from this Service? The owners or tenants living or working in older buildings (particularly before the 1960's) can benefit most from an energy audit.
How Long does it Take? An audit of a typical single family house takes 2-3 hours. Multi-unit or commercial buildings can take longer.
